Waste Minimisation -the three Rs
- Reduce – avoid buying products with excessive packaging or materials that cannot easily be disposed of
- Re-use – try to find alternative uses for packaging and waste goods
- Recycle – place items in appropriate recyling containers
Kerbside recycling: In March 2012 Wiltshire’s kerbside collection service was standardised throughout the county with fornightly recycling and residual waste collection. The target is to increase recycling to 50% but as people get used to the new system could this rise further with the eventual aim to achieve zero waste?
South Wiltshire Agenda 21 has long campaigned for fortnightly collection in order to achieve higher levels of recycling after proven success in other parts of Wiltshire.
SCRAP (Salisbury City residents Action On Packaging) is campaigning to reduce dramatically the use of plastic bags with the aim of becoming the first Plastic Bag Free City in the UK.
